Analysis and design of two dimensional ( 2D ) frame.

Staad structural analysis

1. Go to Desktop 🡪select STAAD.pro Icon and double click


2. Select new project 🡪 select plane 🡪 enter file name as “EXERCISE -1’’🡪Select file destination as “local disk D/ civil department/Rg.no 🡪Select the units as Meters, KiloNewtons 🡪 Click next.


3. Select add beam option 🡪 click on finish.


4.Close the “SNAP NODE/BEAM” window.


5. Entre co-ordinates of 1st node as (0,0,0).


6. This is the created node.


7. Select the node 🡪 Geometry 🡪 Translational repeat.


8. Select the node with “Node cursor”, then click on translation repeat 🡪select the direction as ’Y’🡪spacing as ‘3m’🡪number of steps as ‘2’ 🡪enable link steps.



9. Select the two columns on the screen, click on translation repeat🡪select the direction as ‘X’ 🡪spacing as’6m’ 🡪number of steps as ‘1’ 🡪enable link steps 🡪enable open Base🡪 click ok.





10. Select the two columns on the screen, click on translation repeat🡪select the direction as ‘X’🡪spacing as ‘5m’🡪number of steps as ‘1’🡪enable link steps.





11. Click on “General”🡪”property”🡪”define”🡪 enter all the shape and sizes of the members given.


11.a. Click Rectangle 🡪 yD -> 0.3 🡪 zD 🡪 0.4 🡪 add.


11.b. Click Rectangle 🡪 yD -> 0.25 🡪 zD 🡪 0.35 🡪 add.


11.c. Click circle 🡪 yD -> 0.35 🡪 add.


11.d. Click Rectangle 🡪 yD -> 0.3 🡪 zD 🡪 0.3 🡪 add.


12.a. Select first section 0.3x0.4🡪 Use cursor to assign 🡪 assign 🡪 select first two member as shown in figure below.


12.b. Select second section 0.25x0.35🡪 Use cursor to assign 🡪 assign 🡪 select two beam member as shown in figure below.


12.c. Select third section 0.3x0.3🡪 Use cursor to assign 🡪 assign 🡪 select external column as shown in figure below.


12.d. Select fourth circular section 0.35🡪 Use cursor to assign 🡪 assign 🡪 select interior column as shown in figure below.


13. Go to general🡪 Click on support🡪 Press create


14. Select Fixed support🡪 Add


15. Select fixed support 🡪 Use cursor to assign 🡪 assign🡪 select all the bottom nodes as shown in figure.


16. Select general🡪 Click on “load and definitions” 🡪”load case details”🡪add 🡪select “dead” from drop down box🡪 enter the title as “dead load”🡪add.


17. Select “live” from drop down box🡪 enter the title as “live load”🡪add


18. Select “auto load combinations”🡪”Indian code” from drop down box🡪”generate loads”


19. Deselect the unwanted combinations from the list🡪add.


20. Select dead load 🡪 click Add choose self weight 🡪 click add



21. Select “live load”🡪add🡪”nodal load”🡪Fy=10🡪add.


22. Member load 🡪 uniform force 🡪 W1=-15,d1=0,d2=6,d3=0 🡪direction(GY)🡪add.


23. Member load 🡪 linear varying 🡪W3 = -25, 🡪 direction (Y)🡪Add.


24. Member load 🡪 concentrated force 🡪 P=-15,d1=1.5,d2=0 🡪direction(GY)🡪Add.


25. Member load 🡪 concentrated force 🡪P=-10,d1=3,d2=0 🡪direction(GY)🡪Add.

30. Assign loads to respective nodes and members as shown in figure.


31. Click on commands🡪analysis🡪perform analysis🡪No print 🡪ok.



32. Commands🡪 post analysis print 🡪 Analysis result🡪 Yes.



33. Analysis 🡪 Run analysis 🡪 save.



34. Select Design 🡪 Concrete current code IS456 🡪 Select Parameters 🡪 select Fc and Fymain Click ok.


35. Define parameters 🡪 Fc type 20000 🡪 Click add.


36. select Fymain 🡪 type 500000 🡪 Click add


37. Select commands 🡪 Design beam 🡪 Click add.


38. Design column 🡪 Click add.


39. Take off 🡪 Click add.


40. Select Fc 🡪 Assign to view 🡪 Assign


41. Select Fymain 🡪 Assign to view 🡪 Assign


42. Assign design beam to horizontal members as shown in figure


43. Assign design column to vertical members as shown in figure


45. Assignment of takeoff happens automatically.

46. Select Analyze 🡪 Run analysis .



47. Select Analyze 🡪 Run analysis .



48.Select any member 🡪 Dobule click Concrete design 🡪 check design


49. Beam 🡪 Graph select any member 🡪 See Bending moment and shear force for different load case and combination.


50.Beam 🡪 Reaction forces. See support reaction forces.
